Mickelson beats Els by a single stroke

Phil Mickelson won the 68th Masters in Georgia with a dramatic last-hole birdie to beat Ernie Els by a single stroke on Sunday. In one of the most electrifying final nine-hole battles to date seen over the famed Augusta National Golf Club, the two men battled it out, firing birdies and eagles, but it was Mickelson who snatched victory.

Brian Lara hit an unbeaten 313 against England on Sunday, bringing back memories of his world-record 375 against the same opponents on the same ground nearly 10 years to the day. The West Indies captain led domination on the second day of their fourth and final Test at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

Arrive Alive lashes out at SA road behaviour

A senior national transport department official on Saturday lashed out at motorists for their behaviour on the country’s roads that shows a total disrespect for human life. Wendy Watson, spokesperson for the Arrive Alive campaign, was reacting to an incident this week in which a metro police officer stationed in Nelspruit was killed in a hit and run incident.

Battle to save 30 miners grips Russia

Russia was on Saturday night gripped by the spectacle of rescuers struggling to save up to 30 miners trapped beneath tons of rubble after an explosion in a Siberian coal mine left 22 of their colleagues dead. A blast, apparently caused by a methane gas leak, tore through the Taizhina mine shaft at 6.30am, near the mining town of Osinniki, 3 000km to the east of Moscow in the coal-rich region of Kuzbass.
