Sven-Goran Eriksson has pleaded with England’s fans to judge him on results — not on what they read in the newspapers. Eriksson may have finally ended speculation about a potential move to Chelsea by committing himself unequivocally to the England cause up to and including the 2006 World Cup.

Fifa to reject joint World Cup bid

A joint bid by Libya and Tunisia to host the World Cup in 2010 will be rejected by world football’s governing body, Fifa president Sepp Blatter said on Wednesday. ”Co-hosting between Libya and Tunisia will not be accepted by the executive committee,” Blatter told reporters.

SA military, UN investigate DRC death

The South African military and the United Nations are trying to determine if the shooting of a South African soldier in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was related to a recent coup attempt in that country. South African National Defence Force spokesperson Colonel Kwena Mangope said the soldier was shot at about 11pm on Monday.

New attacks rock Uzbekistan capital

Uzbekistan security forces killed 20 suspected militants on Tuesday in clashes near the residence of President Islam Karimov as a fresh wave of violence rocked the Central Asian country. The firefight between police and the militants occurred after two morning blasts in the northeastern outskirts of the capital, Tashkent.

Terror suspects seized in London

Eight people were arrested under Britain’s anti-terrorist laws on Tuesday in police raids in and around London. The raids also netted half a tonne of a fertiliser that could be used to make a bomb. London has been on guard against a potential attack since the Madrid train bombings.

Sinkholes threaten Katlehong residents

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will be relocating 18 families in Katlehong whose houses are at risk from dangerous sinkhole formations, the mayor announced on Tuesday. This follows 11 reported incidences of dolomite instability in Katlehong and its surrounding areas since January this year.
