Malawi appeals for urgent food aid

Malawi on Thursday appealed for international food relief, saying a third of the country’s 11-million people face imminent starvation. ”Over 3,5-million Malawians … have already run out of food and are on the verge of starvation,” Agriculture Minister Chakufwa Chihana said.

SA medicine prices to be slashed

South Africa will announce draft regulations on Friday that aim to slash medicine prices by up to 70%, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said in Pretoria on Thursday. These regulations on transparent pricing had been delayed by four years due to legal action by pharmaceutical companies.

Bomb threat on giant ocean liner

The world’s largest ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2, arrived on Thursday at the Portuguese island of Madeira under tight security following an anonymous bomb threat. The British shipping company Cunard received three anonymous phone calls in which the caller claimed there were bombs on board the ocean liner.

New code boosts women’s rights in Morocco

A parliamentary commission in Morocco has unanimously recommended a new family code putting wives on a more equal footing with their husbands, officials said on Thursday. The legal age at which girls can marry will be raised from 15 to 18 and polygamy will be permitted only under highly restrictive conditions.

Aids museum planned for South Africa

Preparations are under way for the establishment of South Africa’s first Aids museum, to be located at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital in Soweto. Historian and organising committee member Sue Krige said they are currently in talks with international donors to secure the funding.

Nedcor merger before tribunal

Among the cases that will come before the Competition Tribunal next Wednesday is the proposed merging of two former Rouxcor Holdings subsidiaries into Nedbank. Nedbank acquired all shares in Retail Brands and Continental Beverages after their holding company defaulted on its obligations to the bank in December 2000.
