Bin Laden is alive and planning more attacks

Osama bin Laden is still in Afghanistan and is planning further attacks on United States interests, a spokesperson from Afghanistan’s ousted Taliban regime said on Monday. The spokesperson read a statement that rubbishes claims by the US military that they are confident of capturing the al-Qaeda leader by the end of the year.

Bakili Muluzi dissolves cabinet

Malawian President Bakili Muluzi abruptly dissolved his 45-member Cabinet on Monday without explanation. Muluzi’s Office of the President and Cabinet released a brief statement from the administrative capital Lilongwe saying that all official duties by the ministers and their deputies would be handled by the president’s office from Monday.

Bail denied in massive 419 fraud trial

A Nigerian judge refused to grant bail on Monday to three suspects charged with masterminding a -million fraud and then trying to bribe investigators to drop the case against them. The three suspects face 86 charges relating to the biggest alleged case to date of ”419 fraud”, a crime for which Nigeria has become notorious.

Arafat slams Israeli barrier in court

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat urged the International Court of Justice on Monday to rule against Israel’s West Bank barrier for the sake of peace, as his people readied a ”day of rage” to coincide with the court’s hearings, which opened at The Hague. Israeli police and security forces have been placed on alert amid fears of new attacks.

JSE down almost 1% at midday

The JSE Securities Exchange South Africa (JSE) was almost 1% in the red at midday on Monday, despite a weaker rand. Dealers said the market was experiencing some weakness with the gold price retreating below the $400 an ounce level, and that it was a pity that the market had not been able to capitalise on the slightly weaker currency.
