African leaders adopt peer-review system

African leaders ended their summit in Rwanda on Saturday having adopted a unique peer review system aimed at allowing countries on the continent to judge the behaviour of fellow African states. ”The most important point is that we can now start evaluation,” Mozambican President Joachim Chissano said.

SA will get to bottom of Machel air crash

South Africa’s Deputy President Jacob Zuma promised Mozambicans on Saturday that the truth about an air crash that claimed the life of their communist leader Samora Machel in 1986 would be uncovered. Machel died when the plane he was travelling in crashed in northern South Africa on October 19 1986.

Rescuers dig in after Moscow collapse

At least 24 people were reported killed and 106 injured when the glass and concrete roof covering a huge, two-year-old Moscow water park gave way in what the mayor called the city’s biggest technical accident. A child’s birthday party was being held in the pool area when the roof collapsed, said a Moscow police spokesperson.

Mafikizolo singer gunned down

Top Mafikizolo band singer Tebogo Benedict Madingoane was shot dead in a Soweto roadrage incident early on Saturday and police have arrested a man. Madingoane (32), who was one of the lead singers for the popular kwaito group, was shot dead next to a Caltex garage at Zone 3 in Diepkloof.

Lile sets off the fireworks

Craig Lile turned professional on Guy Fawkes Day in 2001 and he certainly set off a few fireworks at the Woodhill Country Club during the third round of the Telkom PGA Championships on Saturday. The 27-year-old Capetonian surged into a two-shot lead after shooting a five-under-par 67 for a total of 200, 16 under par.

Tunisia on top of the world

Tunisia’s long, painful wait for a meaningful piece of soccer silverware finally came to end in Tunis on Saturday when a 2-1 win over Morocco gave them their first-ever African Nations Cup title. Silva dos Santos, with his fourth goal of the tournament, gave Tunisia the lead after just five minutes with a close-range header.

SA cricket heading for world dominance

South Africa believe they can knock Australia off their perch and become the dominant team in world one-day cricket, South African coach Eric Simons said on Sunday. Simons said that after defeating New Zealand last week in the opening match of their five-match series, the Proteas were looking to inflict a heavy series defeat.
