Opposition political parties on Monday welcomed President Thabo Mbeki’s announcement that the 2004 national and provincial general election will take place on April 14, saying they are ready for it. New National Party leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk said the NNP is ”battle-ready and fighting fit”.

The government gave out 270-million male condoms last year, which is an 80% increase from 1997 when 150-million were distributed, the Department of Health said on Monday. The department announced the figures at the launch of its Sexually Transmitted Infections/Condom Week, which runs from February 9 to 14.

Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang used the opportunity of a parliamentary media briefing to urge journalists again to spread her message that Aids sufferers should use olive oil, lemon and garlic to boost their immune systems. Judge Anton Veldhuizen was hearing closing arguments in the case in which former MEC Freda Adams is suing Marais for R2,3-million for defamation and sexual harassment.
