Strong England team ready for semifinal

England have axed big-tackling centre Mike Tindall from the semifinal line-up to play France in Sydney on Sunday, drafting in Mike Catt for his first start in two years. Josh Lewsey is back after a hamstring strain and Richard Hill makes his first start since a similar problem against Georgia in the World Cup opening game.

Wallabies find weak links in All Blacks armour

Australia coach Eddie Jones said on Thursday the Wallabies have found weaknesses in New Zealand’s defensive armour that the defending champions can attack in Saturday’s World Cup semifinal. Jones did not divulge where the All Blacks’ frailties may lie but indicated fly-half Carlos Spencer would be targeted by Australia.

More cricket safety threats in Pakistan

Members of the New Zealand cricket team have been warned their safety would be threatened if this month’s tour of Pakistan goes ahead, officials revealed on Wednesday, leading to four players refusing to go and putting a question mark over the series. Full details of the threat have not been revealed.

Victory for Santos

Kaizer Chiefs retained their top position on the PSL log when Santos, playing with a gale-force south-easter at their backs, beat Ajax 1-0 in their local derby in Cape Town on Wednesday night. The win puts Santos level with Ajax, two points behind Chiefs. The goal came in the 24th minute from Tyrone Arendse.

Deadly attack on Italians in Iraq

At least 16 Italians were killed in a bomb attack on an Italian base in Iraq on Wednesday, the country’s defence minister said. Hospital officials said seven Iraqi civilians also lost their lives. Italian intelligence services blamed supporters of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for the attack.
