Wildlife officials brace for 2004 ivory sale

Conservationist David Bradfield had an interesting story to tell about one of his visits to Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe. Wearing the disguise of a tourist, he asked a group of curio sellers in the city whether he could buy ivory from them. "When I asked if they could offer some for sale, one vendor produced three bags of worked ivory, ornaments and souvenirs.

Migrant workers sue Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart, the world’s biggest company, has been taken to court by a group of former immigrant employees who have accused the US supermarket chain of conspiring with cleaning contractors to employ them in conditions that were ”one step away from slavery”, the workers’ lawyers said yesterday.

Another editor bites the dust

Vusi Mona, the editor of <i>City Press</i>, has resigned, it was reliably learnt on Wednesday by the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i>. Mona has been at the centre of a media ethics row, accused of having outside business interests and a share in a public relations company doing work for the government.
