At least 14 people were killed, most of them policemen and firefighters, when a blazing 12-storey tower block collapsed on emergency services in a Cairo suburb, police said on Tuesday. Rescue workers pulled out the bodies of four policemen, eight firefighters and two civilians from the building which collapsed during a fire.

Confusion surrounds high-level talks between the Inkatha Freedom Party and an African National Congress team headed by Jacob Zuma reportedly scheduled for Tuesday. ANC national spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said the talks were on, but his IFP counterpart Musa Zondi said he had no knowledge of them.

An air ticket price war became evident on Tuesday when South African Airways announced it had reduced its prices, matching those of Kulula.com. The no-frills carrier, Kulula.com, which had been running its special since January 16 said it was not concerned by the SAA decision to reduce its fares.

Zimbabwe’s Chief Justice, Godfrey Chidyausiku, has ”fast-tracked” an application by the state’s media watchdog for the independent Daily News to be shut down until the courts hear a comprehensive appeal over the legality of official press controls, lawyers said on Tuesday.

South Africa’s Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson has pleaded for an end to all ”comment and speculation” on Judge Siraj Desai. In a statement issued on Tuesday, he also said the question whether Desai should sit as a judge before the rape case against him was finalised was not at issue.
