Saving Southern Africa from starvation

Southern Africa is facing another difficult year of food insecurity. Donors have so far provided $168-million of a $533-million humanitarian appeal covering six countries in the region. Nuclear ‘heroes’ face Pakistani probe

Pakistan’s probe into the alleged sale of nuclear secrets to Iran and Libya has narrowed to three scientists and four military officers, as speculation mounted on Tuesday that ”national heroes” could be charged — those elevated to national hero status for their contributions to making Pakistan a nuclear power.

Egypt building collapse kills at least 14

At least 14 people were killed, most of them policemen and firefighters, when a blazing 12-storey tower block collapsed on emergency services in a Cairo suburb, police said on Tuesday. Rescue teams had accounted for all the missing policemen and firefighters but could not rule out that civilians may still be under the rubble.

Mugabe confirms trip to SA

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday acknowledged he had flown to South Africa at the weekend, saying it was to help a nephew with traditional marriage ceremonies. He was responding to South African media that had reported his visit was to seek medical treatment.

Aids crime proposal under fire

The Aids Law Project has slammed suggestions that the transmission of HIV/Aids be made a crime, saying that such a move would create the dangerous impression that carriers of the virus are alone responsible for ensuring safe sex. ”It is very unrealistic to believe that a draconian law such as this will get people to test [for Aids],” it said.

Charlize Theron nominated for Oscar

The fantasy epic <i>Lord of the Rings: Return of the King</i> emerged on Tuesday as the hot Oscar favourite as it earned 11 nominations for the coveted Academy Awards. South African actress Charlize Theron has been nominated as best lead actress for her role as a serial killer in <i>Monster</i>.
