Mugabe swallows his pride

The opposition call for President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe to hand over power has been echoed worldwide, but less anxiously than the unpublished demand from within the ruling Zanu-PF. A former army colonel, who refused to be named, said he foresaw a dramatic change after the forthcoming annual congress of the party.

UK backs fairer trade system

The United Kingdom recognised that trade was much more important than aid to Africa and the disappointment of the recent Cancun trade talks should not discourage the pursuit of a fairer global trading system, Minister for Africa at the Foreign And Commonwealth Office Chris Mullin said on Monday.

HIV vaccine trials to start in SA

The South African Aids Vaccine Initiative (Saavi) announced on Monday that the first vaccinations will take place this week for the first human clinical trial of an HIV vaccine. Saavi director Dr Tim Tucker said two separate clinical trials would start in Johannesburg and Durban this week and next.

Shoprite launches supermarkets in Ghana

Listed South African food retailer Shoprite Holdings (SHP) has opened its first retail outlets in Ghana, the group announced on Monday. Shoprite is the largest retailer on the African continent with operations in 14 different countries and an annual turnover of over R22-billion. It also plans to open outlets in India in the near future.

Seventy years ago France’s five fledgling private aviation companies joined forces to give birth to what has become a grande dame of airlines — Air France. The airline certainly does not look its age. Far from retiring into obscurity, the French carrier has remained stylishly youthful (as perhaps is fitting for a Parisienne).

A local airline goes international

Domestic airline Nationwide Air has officially launched its first international route on the most popular route in Africa — Johannesburg to London. At a packed auditorium at the Melrose Arch Hotel, Nationwide MD Chris Hoare unveiled the carrier’s latest addition — a Boeing 767-300ER wide-bodied jet — bought from Air Canada.
