Windies stand firm

For the second Test in a row, the West Indies stood firm against overwhelming odds and the South African attack on Monday to ensure the fourth and final Test at Centurion would enter a fifth day. At stumps on a rain shortened fourth day, the Windies had moved to 263 for three and slashed the deficit to just 40 runs.

Manchester United can still retain the title despite their shock defeat to Premiership strugglers Wolves last weekend, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed in Dubai on Monday. The Scot was speaking at a training camp to where they flew after the 1-0 defeat before returning for this weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Northampton Town.

Formula one bosses fear arrest warrants

Formula one team bosses are considering boycotting Grand Prix races in Europe over new European Union rules relating to deaths on the track. Team chiefs fear the warrants could be used against them if a driver is killed. Eight EU member states, including Britain, Belgium and Spain, have already implemented the warrants.

SA beat Windies in rainy Test

South Africa won the fourth cricket Test against the West Indies at Centurion on Tuesday by 10 wickets to clinch the four-match series 3-0. Requiring 46 for victory after bowling the Windies out for 348 on a rain-ravaged final day, Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs stormed to victory in just 3,4 overs.

Rights group supports judge, alleged rape victim

The Foundation for Human Rights said on Monday it will take steps to ensure that Judge Siraj Desai and his alleged rape victim will receive the appropriate support. The foundation partly funded a South African delegation to the World Social Forum in India, where it is alleged Desai raped a North West woman, also a delegation member.

Newly named party ready for elections

Political minnow the Moderate Independent Party kicked off its 2004 election campaign on Monday, aiming to capture five to 10 seats in the Western Cape provincial parliament. Party leader Malcolm Taylor said the decision on whether to contest the elections nationally will be decided within the next two weeks.
