Of 17 Cabinet members appointed by King Mswati III, only one succeeded in winning a seat in the country’s House of Assembly. Not surprisingly it is difficult to pick an outright winner of the elections held in the enigmatic and troubled kingdom of Swaziland last weekend.

The Springbok second team fluffed its lines against Georgia at Aussie Stadium, but won a hard fought contest 46-19. With a number of places up for grabs in Rudolf Straeuli’s first choice 15, only the Bulls pair of flanker Danie Rossouw and flyhalf Derick Hougaard and Lions centre Jacque Fourie managed to rise above the general mediocrity.

Corrie Sanders has set his sights on claiming the most prestigious heavyweight world title of them all. The former World Boxing Union and World Boxing Organisation heavyweight king has been in negotiations in London this week to set the platform for him to fight for the World Boxing Council’s version of the crown, currently held by Lennox Lewis.

I fell in love with Nedbank as a student in the mid-Nineties, when it was a bank for ”people who are serious about money”. Then, last year, I fell out of love with the bank when it launched its ”Who are those people?” campaign. This held up obscene opulence as desirable.

In an attempt to clear his name, Deputy President Jacob Zuma has launched his own informal investigation into allegations that he was involved in corruption in the government’s multibillion-rand weapons procurement programme. This emerged after Zuma held a briefing about two weeks ago for African National Congress members in KwaZulu-Natal to protest his innocence and to drum up support.

The Democratic Alliance on Thursday kept up the pressure around the saga of South Africa’s ”sex pest” envoy to Indonesia. Ambassador Norman Mashabane was found guilty at an internal disciplinary hearing on 21 workplace sexual harassment charges, and a new sex complaint was lodged against him in July.

National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka’s main accusers, Mac Maharaj and Mo Shaik, were again absent from the Hefer commission’s public hearings on Thursday. Their absence on Thursday again robbed them of the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses who made allegations against them.
