A 1932 Pulitzer Prize awarded to The New York Times should be revoked, according to a historian hired by the newspaper to review the winning work, which has been questioned for years. A subcommittee of the Pulitzer Board has been reviewing the prize won by writer Walter Duranty for his series on Russia.

Thabang Paul Khumalo, who has escaped four times from custody, was arrested in Sebokeng south of Johannesburg on Thursday. Police spotted and followed his vehicle to a garage near Orange Farm, where their attempts to shot him resulted in shots being fired.

Travellers and staff were evacuated from Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed Airport, Nigeria’s main air travel hub, on Thursday after a fire broke out in the basement, witnesses said. Thick smoke billowed through the terminal, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, and passengers were ordered out of the building as firefighters arrived on the scene.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial nature conservation has received at least 20 offers from people who want to become involved in a breeding project for the endangered black rhino. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Derek Potter said in a statement on Wednesday that the breeding project would be part of a new programme to increase the numbers of black rhino.

Twelve South African cabinet ministers are to attend a conference with British and European partners in London this weekend to review the country’s first decade of democracy and plan for the next ten years. Dubbed the London Solidarity Conference, the gathering will also be attended by an array of senior corporate, parastatal and government officials.

The seasonally adjusted total motor trading income of South African retailers in motor vehicles and accessories for the three months ended August 2003 increased by 7,9% compared with the previous three months, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday.
