The seasonally adjusted total motor trading income of South African retailers in motor vehicles and accessories for the three months ended August 2003 increased by 7,9% compared with the previous three months, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday.
This was due to increases in the seasonally adjusted income from the sales of new vehicles (+11,6%), other trading income (+6,2%), income from the sales of used vehicles (+6,0%) and workshop income (+2,6%).
However, the seasonally adjusted total motor trading income for August 2003 decreased by 6,1% compared with July 2003, Stats SA added.
In the first eight months of 2003 the total motor trading income of retailers in motor vehicles and accessories increased by 13,2% compared with the first eight months of 2002, due largely to increases in income from the sales of used vehicles (+14,5%), new vehicles (+14,4%), other trading income (+11,5%) and workshop income (+9,4%).
Stats SA added that the total number of new and used vehicles sold during August 2003 increased by 5,0% compared with August 2002, mainly due to an increase of 11,6% in the number of new vehicles sold. This increase was partially counteracted by a decrease of 1,2% in the number of used vehicles sold during the same period.
Furthermore, the total number of new and used vehicles sold during the three months ended August 2003 increased by 9,2% compared with the three months ended August 2002. However, the total number of new and used vehicles sold during August 2003 decreased by 6,5% compared with July 2003.
The total number of vehicles sold during the first eight months of 2003 increased by 3,9% compared with the first eight months of 2002, reflecting increases of 5,9% and 2,0% in the number of new and used vehicles sold respectively, Stats SA said. – I-Net Bridge
