Protector did not look at Zuma-Shaik link

Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana has cleared Deputy President Jacob Zuma of allegations he breached the executive ethics code by not properly declaring his interests and liabilities in the register of financial interests. However, Mushwana did not investigate Zuma’s relationship with his financial adviser, Durban businessman Schabir Shaik.

SA holds Guinness record for rapes

Both the Guinness Book of Records and Interpol say South Africa is the country with the highest rate of rapes, many of them against children, a conference in Cape Town heard on Friday, the final day of the 25th anniversary conference of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Southern Africa.

Quake toll rises in China

At least three people were killed and 26 injured when an earthquake measuring 6,1 on the Richter scale struck southwestern China’s Yunnan province on Thursday — an area that was struck by an earthquake measuring 6,2 on the Richter scale in July. More than 12 000 homes collapsed following Thursday’s quake.

The New Labour Party has expressed its satisfaction that its leader, Peter Marais, has not been implicated in any wrongdoing over the controversial Roodefontein golf estate development. On Thursday Italian multimillionaire Count Riccardo Agusta pleaded guilty to corruption charges involving politicians in the Western Cape government.

Alcoa alleges aluminium dumping by SA firm

Alcoa, the world’s largest aluminium maker, is asking federal authorities to stop alleged dumping of aluminium by a South African company. Pittsburgh-based Alcoa petitioned the Commerce Department and the US International Trade Commission seeking intervention to stop alleged dumping of 6 000 series aluminium alloy rolled plate by Hulett Aluminum Ltd.

Mbeki hauls The Citizen over the coals

The ANC will not abandon national reconciliation, and ”politically motivated lies” will not divide the organisation, President Thabo Mbeki said on Friday. Writing in the African National Congress’ online publication, ANC Today, he questioned the motivation behind The Citizen newspaper’s recent scathing attack on former Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) cadre Robert McBride.
