Pope John Paul II, courageously clinging to the vestiges of a once-robust health, received a rapturous welcome from prelates and pilgrims alike on Thursday as he celebrated a milestone 25th anniversary of his election. Thursday morning’s audience in the Vatican’s Paul VI hall was attended by more than 7 000 pilgrims.

Hermes, a large asteroid that skimmed by the Earth in 1937 but has never been seen again, has been spotted once more after years of effort by astronomers. Hermes created a stir when it flew by close to the Earth in October 1937 at a distance of less than a million kilometers.

Anti-apartheid activist Bram Fischer was reinstated to the Roll of Advocates on Thursday by a full Bench of the Johannesburg High Court. Fischer was welcomed back into the fraternity through the new Reinstatement of Enrolment of Deceased Legal Practitioners Act, also called the ”Bram Fischer Act”.

The absence of detailed statistics relating to crime on tourism hampers efforts to get a true picture of the situation, says Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism Rejoice Mabudafhasi. The police’s administration system ”does not provide for a distinction between crime against tourists and crime against the general public”, she said.

More than 2 000 Zambian workers have been left in the lurch as the South African franchise shop Supreme Furnishers was liquidated by a Lusaka court this week — the third South African franchise in Zambia to close down after the expiry of its five-year tax grace period, a government privatisation incentive. "We appear to have set ourselves up for a fall. We have to scrutinise this policy again," said Zambia’s commerce minister.

Former Western Cape premier Peter Marais continued to protest his innocence in court on Thursday, despite Count Riccardo Agusta’s plea of guilty to corruption. Agusta has agreed to pay a R1-million fine, admitting that payments to Marais’s New National Party were meant to smooth the way for planning approval of his Roodefontein golf estate development.
