WTO deputy head speaks on African tourism

African tourism could hold the key to rapid economic development, says Dr David de Villiers, deputy secretary general of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO). But as yet few African nations have tapped its enormous potential. In a recent interview, he advises that Africa take up the challenge with regards to sustainable tourism.

Whose been a naughty boy then?

Australian brothels are stocking up on whips and karaoke machines in anticipation of a boom in business generated by this month’s Rugby World Cup. With more than 100 000 overseas vistors expected for the tournament, Eros Association coordinator Robbie Swan said business was set to increase by at least 30%.

Boland left with work to do

Trailing the Griqua Diamonds by 159 runs on the first innings, Boland were 16 without loss at stumps on Wednesday, the second day of their three-day friendly at the Yorkshire Cricket Club ground in Kimberley. Benji Hector and especially Adrian McLaren set about a depleted Boland bowling attack with relish.

Walls go up in West Bank

The Israeli Cabinet has decided to build a series of fences deep in the heart of the West Bank as it forged ahead with a controversial separation barrier in the face of heavy international criticism. The aim is ”to have as many Jews as possible inside the fence and as few as possible Arabs”, a government official said.

DRD to retrench 2 700 mineworkers

Two thousand seven hundred mineworkers will definitely be retrenched at Durban Roodepoort Deep operations in the North West, the gold mine has announced. A spokesperson said the retrenchment would go ahead irrespective of the outcome of talks between the firm and the National Union of Mineworkers.
