Nigeria sparks regional polio outbreak

Polio is speading across West Africa from Nigeria, the United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned. A WHO officer said new cases of the virus imported from Nigeria had been identified in Ghana and Niger, adding that the situation was made worse by another outbreak of a new virus in Togo.

Kelly inquiry comes to an end

The inquiry into the suicide of British government weapons expert David Kelly is wrapping up 22 days of oral evidence before the senior jurist who is heading it sits down to write up his findings. Kelly’s death plunged Prime Minister Tony Blair into the worst crisis of his six years in office.

US media split over Bush’s speech

Four leading United States newspapers were divided on the results of US President George Bush’s speech before the United Nations General Assembly requesting help in rebuilding Iraq. The <i>Washington Post</i> and <i>New York Times</i> said Bush did not inspire UN members with his unwillingness to relinquish control in Iraq.

Hurricane Marty loses steam

Hurricane Marty, which battered the Baja California peninsula and sideswiped Mexico’s western mainland coast, has been downgraded to a tropical depression. Marty’s 160kph hurricane-force winds slammed into the Los Cabos tourist region on the Baja California peninsula on Monday, causing at least five deaths.

Annan is not a ‘cheeky darkie’

New Zealand’s leading current affairs broadcaster, Paul Holmes, has apologised for calling United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan a ”cheeky darkie” on his morning radio show. Holmes said he ”surrendered to baseness” when he said that the world was not going to be told how to live by a Ghanaian.
