NNP asks for urgent firearm amnesty

The New National Party has renewed its call for an amnesty for people to hand in illegal firearms, saying ”rather sooner than later”. Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula has said it remained the government’s intention to reduce the number of firearms in the country, and to institute efficient regulations regarding gun ownership.

Africa not in top 10 of world’s protected areas

More than 100 000 protected areas have been established to date across the world, according to a United Nations report released at the fifth World Parks Congress in Durban — but none of the top 10 areas listed are in Africa. Still, between 10% and 30% of some of the world’s vital natural features are now in these protected areas.

Media dispute delays King inquiry

The King inquiry into claims of racism in rugby has been delayed by the continuing dispute over media coverage. On Monday night, Cape High Court Judge Roger Cleaver rejected the SABC’s bid for an order that they be allowed to broadcast the proceedings of the inquiry.

Fear and trembling in the east

A small, low-profile university campus is set to become a test case for one of the country’s most complex tertiary education mergers. The East London campus of Rhodes University is the price Rhodes– an institution that for nearly a century has enshrined English liberal values — will pay to retain its name and base in Grahamstown. In January, the University of Fort Hare will absorb the East London campus.
