A gay man claiming compensation from the Road Accident Fund scored a legal victory for homosexuals on Friday in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. Appeal Judge Tom Cloete found in favour of Antonie Michael du Plessis, whose long-term partner, Albert Ernest Clack, died in 1999 in a vehicle collision.

President Thabo Mbeki has dismissed suggestions the ANC and Cosatu were at loggerheads. The UN demanded that Israel drop its threat to remove the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, by an overwhelmingly majority yesterday, thus isolating Israel and the US. The general assembly voted 133-4 the day after President Bush blamed Arafat for undermining the current round of peace negotiations.
