United States President George Bush has charged the Pentagon with devising an expanded bombing plan for Iran that can be carried out at 24 hours’ notice. An article in the New Yorker magazine by the journalist Seymour Hersh describes the contingency bombing plan as part of a general overhaul by the Bush administration of its policy towards Iran.

French TV host Jean-Luc Delarue was detained by police officers upon arriving at Charles de Gaulle airport on Sunday for allegedly attacking cabin crew on a flight to South Africa earlier this month. The TV star, travelling in first class, allegedly insulted, bit and slapped one of the flight attendants.

Dr Wouter Basson says he will defend his medical practice after it emerged that he would be charged for his alleged role in the army’s weapons programme, media reports said on Monday. Complaints were lodged with the Health Professions Council of South Africa about Basson’s alleged role in Project Coast.

The African National Congress (ANC) is ”more than capable” of speaking for itself on its state of organisation and other matters affecting it, party spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said on Sunday. Medical aid scheme Discovery Health will foot the bill for some of fraud convict Schabir Shaik’s hospital stay but not all of it. Discovery chief executive Neville Koopowitz said the company had to obtain a comprehensive a report due to the nature of the case and Shaik’s lengthy stay at the St Augustine’s private hospital.

Germany (Nico Hulkenberg) scored their sixth consecutive win and their eighth of the season in round eight of the A1 Grand Prix World Cup of Motorsport with back-to-back wins in the sprint and feature races at Durban’s street circuit on Sunday. The 19-year-old German dominated the race weekend.

One person was killed on Mauritius and nine hurt in the French Indian Ocean department of Réunion when a tropical cyclone brushed the island at the weekend. The victims had ignored official bans on going out while Cyclone Gamede was in the vicinity. In the south of Réunion, a 520m-long bridge was swept away.

Louis Oosthuizen claimed his second victory in four tournaments when he won the Telkom PGA Championship at Country Club Johannesburg’s Woodmead Course on Sunday. Oosthuizen birdied the last for a 65 and a total of 22 under par, giving him a one-stroke victory in the final tournament of the Sunshine Tour’s 2006/07 season.
