PAC: ‘ANC is for cut-throat capitalism’

The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) said on Saturday at the party’s 29th Robert Sobukwe Commemoration rally, at the Collie Koeberg Stadium in Graaff-Reinet, that the PAC will never join hands with the African National Congress (ANC), which it accuses of ”cut-throat capitalism” that only benefits its own party officials.

Serious accident leaves N1 closed

One person was injured in an accident that left the N1 closed to traffic early on Sunday, Gauteng emergency workers said. ER24’s Werner Vermaak said a 30-year-old man sustained severe head injuries when his vehicle overturned several times along the N1 north near the Samrand offramp at about 2am

Blues move atop Super 14 standings

Replacement winger Rudi Wulf scored two tries as the Auckland Blues overwhelmed the Queensland Reds 38-13 in a Super 14 rugby match on Saturday. Wulf scored a try in each half at Eden Park as the Blues scored four tries for a bonus point and moved atop the competition standings at 3-1 midway through the fourth round.

France’s Duval flies in A1 practice sessions

Team France’s Loic Duval set the fastest times in the first two practice sessions at the A1 Grand Prix in Durban as Team South Africa did battle with a drive shaft that broke on Friday. In scorching temperatures, Duval set a lap time of 1:19,36 at the morning practice session, and bettered that with a time of 1:18,62 in the afternoon session.

Blair wants UK to be US defence launch pad

Downing Street on Friday confirmed it had asked the United States to consider Britain as a possible launching pad for US missile interceptors as part of the Bush administration’s proposed ”Son of Star Wars” anti-ballistic defence scheme. The United Kingdom government had previously played down such reports.

Cyclone ‘destroyed most of Vilankulo’

At least three people were killed and dozens injured in the tourist resort of Vilankulo when a tropical cyclone slammed into Mozambique’s southern coast this week, the National Emergency Operations Centre and the Red Cross said on Friday. ”Most of the buildings have been destroyed,” a Red Cross officer said.

SA’s aspiring CAs fail to make the grade

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) on Friday expressed disappointment at the poor pass rate of chartered accounting (CA) students. This year’s overall pass rate, in the qualifying exams written as part of a process to becoming fully qualified CAs, was 41% — a 14% decrease from last year.
