Cyclone Favio, sweeping in after wreaking havoc in Madagascar, made landfall at Vilankulo in Mozambique on Thursday morning. Tshepho Ngobeni, marine forecaster at the South African weather service, told the Mail & Guardian Online that the storm had average wind speeds of about 176km/h, with gusts of up to 246km/h.

Two domestic workers accused of stealing jewellery worth R4-million from the home of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will appear in the Orlando Magistrate’s Court on Friday, said police. The police denied earlier reports that the pair were found in possession of the jewellery and that police had confiscated it.

The Cabinet has approved a policy and strategy to implement free and open-source software (Foss) in government departments, government communications head Themba Maseko said on Thursday. ”All new software developed for or by the government will be based on open standards and government will itself migrate current software to Foss,” he told a media briefing.

A New Zealand fishing boat has landed what is believed to be a world-record squid weighing an estimated 450kg, officials said on Thursday. The gigantic sea creature is about 10m long and about 150kg heavier than the next biggest specimen ever found. Colossal squid are found in Antarctic waters and are not related to the giant squid.
