Iran will not stop uranium enrichment, chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said on Wednesday, despite a call by the European Union and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to halt sensitive nuclear work. ”We heard about this EU demand and we said our view,” Larijani told a news conference.

The recent water shortage at Gauteng’s Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is over after repairs were made to a burst water pipe. Some sections, including the entire theatre block, at the large Soweto hospital had been without water since last week Wednesday.

South Africa will not immediately share information with other countries on a worldwide nuclear-technology smuggling ring, its ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency said on Wednesday. His statement comes a day after he urged other countries affected by the network to enhance their efforts to prosecute other role players involved in it.

A 32-year-old Nigerian man appeared in court on Tuesday on a charge of instructing his monkey to bite a teenager, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported. Prosecutor lawyer Thaddeus Joseph told an Abuja magistrate’s court that Sunday Adeyemi on September 2 instructed his monkey to bite 11-year-old Samson Sule.

Former archbishop Pius Ncube, a leading critic of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe who resigned after an adultery scandal, was forced out by the Vatican, a news report in Zimbabwe said on Wednesday. In an article headlined ”Pius forced to resign”, the government mouthpiece Herald newspaper said Ncube (60) had been pressured to leave by the Vatican.

Oil hit a record high of nearly $79 a barrel on Wednesday, after the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’s (Opec) modest output increase failed to allay winter supply concerns and ahead of United States inventory data. US light crude for October delivery set a record high of $78,99 a barrel.

The hole in the protective ozone layer over the Antarctic is forming again, but should remain just below the record size it reached last year, a scientist at the United Nations’s weather agency said Wednesday. The gap in the ozone in the upper atmosphere, at altitudes of up to 25km, has reached a size of about 23-million square kilometres.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7,9 struck struck near Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Wednesday, triggering tsunami warnings in Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka, officials said. Indonesia’s Global TV reported that several buildings in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, had collapsed.
