Bulldogs, Pumas in dramatic draw

A penalty by centre Oliver Fowles five minutes into referee’s optional time earned the Border Bulldogs a dramatic 19-19 draw against the Pumas at a wet East London’s Absa Stadium on Friday night. It was a game of two halves with the visitors doing the bulk of their scoring in the first and the Bulldogs in the second.

Lions clip Valke’s wings

The Golden Lions massacred the Valke 62-5 in an Absa Currie Cup fixture at a chilly Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Friday evening. The Lions jumped to fourth place on the Currie Cup log with only their second win from five games, while their opponents remain rooted to the bottom.

India’s Khan leaves England reeling

Zaheer Khan took three wickets as India reduced England to 169 for seven at stumps on the first day of the second Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Friday. India’s performance was all the more impressive as all the wickets fell in just two sessions after a wet outfield meant there was no play before lunch.

Hobbling Beckham sits out on LA match

David Beckham will not play on Saturday for LA Galaxy in a Superliga match in Los Angeles against Chivas of Mexico because of his injured left ankle, the Major League Soccer club announced on Friday. The English superstar only made his Galaxy debut last Saturday in the 78th minute as a substitute because of the nagging injury.

Afghan elders join talks on S Korean hostages

Two Afghan lawmakers — one of them a former Taliban member — and several influential elders have joined negotiations with the hard-line militia to step up pressure for the release of 22 South Korean hostages, an official said on Saturday. The Taliban has demanded the release of insurgent prisoners in exchange for the hostages.

US accuses Saudis of telling lies about Iraq

The extent of the deterioration in United States-Saudi relations was exposed for the first time on Friday when Washington accused Riyadh of working to undermine the Iraqi government. The Bush administration warned Saudi Arabia, until this year one of its closest allies, to stop undermining the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

Blow for Richard Branson’s space programme

Richard Branson’s plans to run the first commercial space-flight service were thrown into disarray on Friday after an explosion during a test of the rocket’s propulsion system left three workers dead and three seriously wounded with shrapnel injuries and burns. Witnesses said the explosion was accompanied by a blast that sounded like a bomb.
