NUM, De Beers to meet over retrenchments

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will meet diamond giant De Beers in Kimberley on Friday to discuss planned retrenchments, the NUM said. ”The discussions are a continuation of earlier talks on [the] De Beers plan to retrench workers in the province,” said Rivonia Morwakgosi, the NUM’s Kimberley regional chairperson.

World Cup costs force delay of hospital construction

The building of a modern hospital in De Aar has been put on hold due to the preparation costs of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the Northern Cape health department said on Thursday. Spokesperson Shelley Fielding confirmed there is a 12-month delay in the building of a R200-million hospital in De Aar due to a cutback in money available from the National Treasury.

Quake rattles Taiwan but no reports of damage

A moderate earthquake rattled Taiwan on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage were reported. The magnitude of the earthquake and the epicentre of the tremor were not immediately available. Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.

Beirut clashes leave students dead

At least two students were shot dead and 35 others wounded in Beirut street fighting on Thursday between students loyal to the government and opposition supporters, a security source said. Opposition-run television station NBN put the death tally from the fighting, which spilled over from the Arab University campus, at four, including two students.

Cosatu criticises SA vote on Burma

South Africa should have condemned Burma’s military regime and supported a call for sanctions against it, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said on Thursday. It joined others who have criticised the country using its inaugural vote at the United Nations Security Council earlier in January to vote against a resolution demanding an end to human rights abuses in Burma.

Iraq no ‘militant haven’ despite bombs

Bombs killed at least 28 people in Baghdad on Thursday, but Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki vowed his new crackdown in Baghdad would leave militants nowhere to hide. In a speech to Parliament, Maliki urged politicians on all sides to support his security plan, backed by about 17 000 United States reinforcements, which is seen by many as a last chance to stem sectarian violence in the capital.

Goosen takes charge in Doha

Retief Goosen took a big step towards re-discovering the form he lost in 2006 with a clinical seven-under-par 65 in the first round of the ,2-million Qatar Masters on Thursday. The South African held his own in the sometimes blustery conditions in the afternoon to take a one-shot lead over Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiminez and Aussie Nick O’Hern, who shot both shot 66.
