Anthrax kills 200 cattle in Zimbabwe

An estimated 200 cattle have died of anthrax in Masvingo in Zimbabwe in the past two months, Harare’s Herald newspaper reported on Monday. Its website said the anthrax outbreak had been cited as the biggest threat to Masvingo’s efforts to restock its beef herd, which was almost halved in 1992’s nationwide drought.

Mogadishu in chaos, says Somali president

Somali gunmen fired at a convoy of Ethiopian troops in Mogadishu in the latest attack on forces backing the government, threatening efforts to restore effective rule in the chaotic Horn of Africa nation. Saying Mogadishu was ”in chaos”, President Abdullahi Yusuf appointed officials on Monday to take charge of the city.

McBride on annual leave

Controversial Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride, who rolled his car last month near Centurion, is on annual leave and will be back at work next Monday, his office has confirmed. This is after reports that he was on sick leave and was scheduled to return to his office on Monday.

Acsa launches self-service check-in kiosks

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has unveiled self-service check-in kiosks — Flightcheck — at South Africa’s four major airports, OR Tambo, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Acsa said that 36 kiosks have been installed and plans are under way to add a further 70, bringing the total investment to around R20-million for the 106 kiosks.

Eurotunnel ‘saved from bankruptcy’

A French court lifted on Monday a threat of bankruptcy over Eurotunnel, which operates the undersea rail tunnel linking France to Britain, but said a rescue plan must be applied within three years. A Paris commercial court approved a financial restructuring package to halve Eurotunnel’s debt mountain, meaning the group will avoid a cash crisis predicted for early this year.

Unrepentant Yengeni walks free

Former African National Congress chief whip and fraud convict Tony Yengeni walked out of Malmesbury prison on Monday, saying his imprisonment had been a mistake in the first place. ”It is a great day for me and my family and for the movement in that I’m now walking out of the gate of this prison, a place that I was not supposed to be in the first place,” Yengeni said.

Two arrested in Boeremag sweep

Two people have been arrested in a Limpopo raid reportedly linked to the Pretoria High Court escapes of two Boeremag members last year. However, the arrests were not of the fugitives, Herman van Rooyen (33) and Rudi Gouws (28), who were on trial for alleged treason.

Somali gunmen launch new attack on Ethiopian troops

Somali gunmen fired at a convoy of Ethiopian troops in Mogadishu, the latest in a series of attacks against forces backing the government, a Somali government source said on Monday. The attack happened late on Sunday in the northern Arafat area, where hours before Ethiopian soldiers helped government troops seize guns and explosives.
