Say hello to the burkini — a swimming costume designed for Muslim women. It is a semi-fitting two-piece swimsuit that connects to an “ahiida hijood” and it will be worn by Australian Muslim lifesavers from January. Sydney designer Aheda Zanetti came up with the design after Surf Life Saving Australia began a drive to recruit more Islamic lifeguards.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez stormed to a re-election victory in Sunday’s vote, handing him an ample mandate to broaden his promised socialist revolution and challenge Washington’s influence in Latin America. Chávez told cheering supporters at his presidential palace late Sunday his landslide was a blow to United States President George Bush’s administration.

The deaths of four French climbers who tried to scale a 7 242m Himalayan summit after crossing illegally into Tibet has highlighted the high-risk culture of ”peak hopping” in the growing adventure sport. The group had bought a relatively inexpensive permit for the 5 928m Mount Paldor, about 80km north of Kathmandu, which is described as a ”straightforward climb”.

A youthful and relatively inexperienced South Africa trounced a star-studded World XV 32-7 at a miserably cold, wet and blustery Walkers stadium on Sunday. Having led 10-0 at the break, South Africa scored three tries in the second half to finish their end-of-year tour with their second win from four outings.

Johannesburg metro police on Sunday arrested five motorists for speeding, including a Lamborghini driver doing 251kph in Midrand. Along with the luxury car owner, metro police arrested the drivers of a Peugot and a Porsche driving in excess of 180kph on the N14 in Midrand, said Inspector Edna Mamonyane.

Lawyers for Saddam Hussein and two former aides sentenced to death lodged appeals on Sunday, the Iraqi prosecutor said, following a trial slammed by some rights experts as unfair and fundamentally flawed. The defence had been given until Tuesday to submit their appeals.

South Africa’s Ernie Els and Spain’s Sergio Garcia have been fined nominal amounts for throwing golf clubs at the Sun City Challenge, tournament officials revealed on Sunday. Els threw his club on the 14th hole during Saturday’s third round after Garcia had performed a similar act of displeasure on the ninth hole during his first round.

A continental review body has warned that crime, poverty, unemployment and the ruling African National Congress party’s domination threatens South Africa’s post-apartheid democracy, the Sunday Times newspaper reported. The paper said a report by the African Peer Review Mechanism found that ”crime is one of the most difficult of the many challenges facing South Africa in the post-apartheid era”.
