Cuckoo-clock pair wound up by time change

Britain puts its clocks back one hour at 2am (1am GMT) on Sunday, giving most people a welcome extra hour in bed — but two cuckoo-clock enthusiasts will have precious little time on their hands. Brothers Roman and Maz Piekarski have more than 500 clocks at their Cuckooland museum in Cheshire, north-west England.

Fiery Ntini bowls SA into semifinals

Makhaya Ntini grabbed 5-21 as South Africa conjured a great escape to advance to the Champions Trophy semifinals with a dramatic 124-run win over Pakistan on Friday. The Proteas recovered from a disastrous 42-5 within the first hour to post 213-8 before Pakistan were themselves reduced to 27-6 and bowled out for 89 in the eventful day-night international.

Mbeki: Regional integration must be sustainable

Regional integration is rightly being pursued in the Southern African Development Community as it is a critical instrument to boost economic growth and raise living standards — but it has to be sustainable, says South African President Thabo Mbeki. In his regular Friday internet column, <i><a href="http://www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/anctoday/" target="_blank" class="standardtext">ANC Today</a></i>, the president said regional integration in the developing world "has all too often been a graveyard of failed expectations".

Call for unity in fight against Aids

Those involved in the fight against HIV and Aids have to work together, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said on Friday. ”We have to make sure that our energy is dedicated to the fight against HIV and Aids and not against each other,” she told a Civil Society Coalition HIV-Aids congress in Johannesburg.

Re-elected Zambian president to slash taxes

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa pledged to deliver on pre-election promises on Friday to slash taxes and combat poverty in his maiden speech to MPs since being returned for a second term a month ago. Mwanawasa also announced sweeping policy changes to address grievances levelled by his chief rival, main opposition leader Michael Sata.
