The toll in one of Europe’s deadliest mining accidents for years rose to 22 on Thursday, as rescue workers at a southern Polish pit discovered more bodies and hopes faded of finding the remaining missing miner alive. Rescuers who have been battling hellish conditions at the Halemba mine at Ruda Slaska in Poland’s Silesian coalbelt since a methane gas blast on Tuesday found 16 more bodies.

The death of a British hostage in Nigeria’s oil-producing south in a shootout between kidnappers and troops raises the stakes for oil workers but is unlikely to change much for the industry. Abductions of oil workers are frequent in the lawless delta but this was the first time a foreign hostage has died.

Around 50 soldiers loyal to Congolese former rebel chief Jean-Pierre Bemba were withdrawn from Kinshasa on Thursday after President Joseph Kabila gave an ultimatum for Bemba’s forces to be removed from the city. Diplomats intensified efforts to head off another confrontation between soldiers and supporters of the two rivals, who faced off in a historic presidential run-off vote.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation board of governors on Thursday indefinitely shelved Iran’s bid for technical aid for a reactor project due to fears it could yield bomb-grade plutonium, diplomats said. But the ruling left open the possibility of revisiting Iran’s request in the future.

Allegations of torture levelled against members of the South African Police Service by a cash-in-transit security guard are being investigated, police said on Thursday. ”Conduct of this nature — if [the] allegations are proved to be correct — is not only unacceptable, but also unconstitutional and criminal … Clearly, torture is out of question,” said Director Phuti Setati.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf missed a double century by nine runs as the second Test against the West Indies ended in a high-scoring draw on Thursday’s final day. Yousuf made 191, his seventh hundred of the year, putting on 152 runs for the sixth wicket with Abdul Razzaq, who was out for 80, as Pakistan reached 461-7 before play was called off after tea.

South Africa’s intelligence agencies are investigating who leaked information in connection with the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble, the government’s spokesperson Themba Maseko said on Thursday. Maseko said he found the leaks ”totally unacceptable”.
