The European Union and South Africa on Tuesday hailed a new closer relationship aimed at enhancing their strategic political cooperation on issues including conflict resolution in Africa. The two sides agreed to work towards a ”strategic partnership” — special relations which the EU so far enjoys only with Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.

A century from captain Brian Lara could not prevent West Indies from tumbling to a nine-wicket defeat by Pakistan on the fourth day of the first Test on Tuesday. Lara scored a defiant 122 runs, his 33rd Test hundred, but it was not enough to stop West Indies from suffering their 16th defeat in their last 23 Tests since May 2004.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter once again dismissed fears that the next World Cup could be moved from South Africa and said the 2010 hosts were further along at this point than Germany were four years ago. ”They’ll get it done,” Blatter was quoted as telling German magazine Sport Bild on Tuesday. ”It can and will take place in South Africa — I’m convinced of that.”

It is too late for Judge Hilary Squires to distance himself from the ”generally corrupt” phrase as Jacob Zuma’s name is already ruined, the African National Congress Youth League said on Tuesday. ”Hilary is not assisting anyone with distancing himself from the phrase ‘generally corrupt’, he’s basically deepening the legal crisis,” said president Fikile Mbalula.

Any terror risk in Western Sahara stems from Morocco’s illegal occupation, the territory’s independence movement said on Tuesday, dismissing a Moroccan warning that an independent state could harbour terrorists. Mohamed Abdelaziz, President of the self-proclaimed government in exile for Western Sahara, said that Morocco’s policy on Western Sahara was the real security risk.

A Thai zoo will show its star residents, a pair of young giant pandas, "porn" videos to teach the famously sexually inactive animals how to mate, an official said on Tuesday. "We have to encourage them to mate, and the videos will show mating positions of male pandas and female pandas," said a veterinarian at the zoo.

A shoplifter who snatched a haul of cosmetics in an Estonian department store left security scratching their heads, until they found the ill-gotten gains stashed in his wooden leg, officials said on Tuesday. A limping customer entered the shop in the Estonian capital, Tallinn, the Falck security company said.
