Kiwis don’t like to leave mums at home

New Zealanders may be able to do without many things, but it seems that when it comes to travelling, they can’t do without their mum, according to a survey released on Sunday.

Mums were identified as the fourth-most-important item to take along when heading overseas, behind credit cards, a camera and a copy of the Lonely Planet travel guide.

The survey, conducted for GlobalPlus credit card, also revealed 87% of New Zealanders preferred to sit beside family or friends when flying.

Sports stars, especially prominent rugby players, were the second preference, accounting for 5%.

Former All Blacks flyhalf Andrew Merhtens was the most favoured rugby player, with Daniel Carter, Richie McCaw, Anton Oliver and Christian Cullen among those also rating a mention.

Celebrities and politicians shared third billing in the preferred seating companion stakes.

According to the survey, Prime Minister Helen Clark was a more popular choice than Madonna, while opposition leader Don Brash was rated equal with Tom Cruise. — AFP
