Chunder down under for ailing Elton John

Elton John’s latest Australian tour got off to an inauspicious start when the British pop superstar had to leave the stage briefly to be sick, local media reported on Monday. John was about to perform Crocodile Rock, one of the most popular songs of his four-decade career, on Sunday when he felt unwell and left the stage in Brisbane for about five minutes.

Humpback whales have ‘human’ brain cells

Humpback whales have a type of brain cell seen only in humans, the great apes, and other cetaceans such as dolphins, researchers reported on Monday. This might mean such whales are more intelligent than they have been given credit for, and suggests the basis for complex brains either evolved more than once, or have gone unused by most species of animals.

Springboks slam use of old SA flag

The Springbok rugby team’s management and players have strongly condemned the behaviour of some people who displayed the old South African flag during the two clashes against England at Twickenham over the past two weeks. Among the thousands of fans at Twickenham on Sunday, at least four were carrying old South African flags.

Surf Ski World Cup goes to SA

South Africa won the Surf Ski World Cup in Perth in emphatic style this weekend, headed by back-to-back victories in both legs of the event by 43-year-old Durban ace Oscar Chalupsky, who romped home to win the 30km second-leg event from Rottnest Island to Hillary Harbour outside Perth on Sunday.

Standard Chartered: More rate hikes on cards

While inflation data to be released this week is likely to be more favourable, there is still a strong possibility of even more rate hikes than the market is currently expecting, Standard Chartered Bank said in a statement on Monday. Economist Razia Khan said that with the strengthening of the rand, market expectations for further tightening have been scaled back significantly.

EU: Last-ditch talks with Turkey over Cyprus fail

Last-ditch talks in Finland on Monday between the European Union and Turkey aimed at averting an EU crisis with Ankara over the Cyprus issue have failed, Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja said. "An agreement could not be reached," Tuomioja, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Presidency, told reporters following talks.
