The Supersport Series match at Paarl between the Cape Cobras and the Dolphins petered out into the expected draw on Sunday. With the pitch giving no assistance to the bowlers, and the batsmen on both sides showing absolutely no willingness to take the slightest risk, the result had been on the cards for most of the four days.

Mamelodi Sundowns failed to reach a dominant position in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title race when they missed an 85th-minute penalty and were held to a goalless draw by Free State Stars in Qwa Qwa on Sunday. In other matches, Dynamos beat Ajax, Black Leopards beat Golden Arrows and Celtic and Supersport played to a draw.

The four-day Supersport match between the Mercedes Warriors and the Nashua Titans ended on Sunday amid controversy about an hour before the scheduled close when the groundstaff at Mercedes-Benz Park were slow to put on the covers as it started raining heavily after the players had left the field because of bad light.

Zimbabwean authorities are considering moving elephants from the country’s overburdened national parks to Namibia after at least 50 pachyderms starved to death. About 50 elephants died in separate incidents in the famous Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe’s dry southwestern region, prompting senior government officials to visit the area.

The JSE was in positive territory just after midday on Monday after Friday’s release of strong economic growth numbers in the United States boosted markets globally. With London opening an hour later as clocks were switched back from daylight saving time, volumes were fairly light however.

Carl Pettersson steadied his nerves and his swing down the stretch and scored an even-par 71 to win the Chrysler Championship for his first United States PGA Tour victory on Sunday. Chad Campbell made five birdies on the back nine in a terrific charge, including a 12-foot putt that swirled into the cup on the 18th hole.

Team South Africa travel to Australia in optimistic mood for round four of the inaugural A1 Grand Prix (A1GP) World Cup of motorsport at Eastern Creek near Sydney in Australia this weekend. ”The A1GP series is proving to be a hotly contested and close competition,” said Team South Africa’s CEO, Dana Cooper.

The government will not invoke World Trade Organisation rules to block the flow of cheap Chinese clothing into South Africa, Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said on Sunday. However, tariffs on raw materials such as yarn used by the local textile and clothing manufacturers may be reviewed in order to reduce input costs for the embattled sector.
