From Pooh Corner to Shit Creek

Spring was turning to summer in the Hundred Acre Wood, and a million new green leaves rustled in the warm breeze that set the carpet of flowers below dancing. Up in a sky of the purest blue the larks sang, and down in his pretty little house, with its quaint curtains and welcoming bell-pull, Piglet knelt hunched over his toilet, riding out the dry heaves.

Maradona scores winner in new career

The Argentine football legend Diego Maradona looks set to crown his new career as a television interviewer by landing a rare, exclusive interview with a man not used to being asked awkward questions — Fidel Castro. Maradona, whose successful television work comes with a newly slimmed-down look achieved with the help of Cuban doctors, was on Thursday reported to have landed in Havana with a film crew ready for the interview.

Redemption for White Sox

Almost half a century since the team last graced the World Series, the Chicago White Sox won baseball’s October ritual with a 4-0 sweep of the Houston Astros in the best-of-seven contest. It began on Sunday with a home run from their third batter up, Jermaine Dye, that led to a 4-3 victory in Game One in Chicago and ended when the same player hit a run-scoring single for a 1-0 victory in Game Four in Houston on Wednesday.

D-Day again

Railway regulator appoints team to probe crash

The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) has appointed a eight technical experts to probe the crash between the Blue Train and the Shosholoza Meyl in the Northern Cape on Wednesday night. Herman Bruwer, the regulatory body’s general manager for safety assurance, said on Friday the RSR was finalising the terms of reference of an independent board of inquiry.

Namibians pay homage to chief who fought Germans

Nama-speaking tribes in Namibia will flock to a tiny village this weekend to pay tribute a famous chief who raised the banner of revolt against German colonial forces but was killed in battle a century ago. Tribal members will descend on Gibeon, a small town about 360km south of Windhoek, to commemorate Hendrik Witbooi, who perished on 29 October 1905 while fighting the German army.

Israel to reopen New Zealand embassy to end spat

Israel is to reopen an embassy in New Zealand, Foreign Minister Winston Peters said on Friday, signalling a further warming in once chilly relations between the two. The relationship took a frosty turn after two suspected Israeli spies were arrested in March 2004 and charged with trying to fraudulently obtain New Zealand passports.
