US air strikes kill 70 insurgents in Iraq

About 70 insurgents were killed in United States air strikes in the Ramadi region of western Iraq, where five US and two Iraqi soldiers were killed in a weekend roadside bombing, the US military said on Monday. Fifty rebels were killed on Sunday in raids by helicopters and fighter jets on a suspected safe house in the Abu Faraj region.

Two strong quakes shake Turkish city

A second powerful quake, measuring 5,9 on the Richter scale, rocked the western Turkish city of Izmir on Monday, a spokesperson for the Kandilli observatory in Istanbul said. The quake came only a few hours after another powerful quake. On Sunday, a moderately strong earthquake jolted central Japan.

Mbeki visits troubled municipality

The five Sedibeng district municipality residents who were earlier reported to have typhoid are not critically ill, the council’s executive mayor Mlungisi Hlongwane said on Sunday after a meeting with President Thabo Mbeki, who visited the area on Sunday and spoke to officials about problems such as corruption and housing.

Dlamini-Zuma to meet Sinn Fein leader

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will host Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams for discussions in Pretoria on Tuesday, her department said on Monday. Sinn Fein is the political wing of the Irish Republican Army. Adams will pay a special visit to South Africa from Tuesday to Friday.

James Blake won his second title this season with a defeat of 2002 champion Paradorn Srichaphan 6-1, 7-6 (8/6) at the €680 250 Stockholm Open to stretch a late-season surge of form. Gangs pillage potato farms near Harare

As economic hardships and food shortages bite in Zimbabwe, thieves are mounting armed raids on potato farms near the capital Harare, the state-controlled Herald reported on Monday. Thieves armed with axes, spears and slingshots in large groups of up to 80 people have assaulted guards, killed their dogs and stolen potatoes worth one billion Zimbabwe dollars.

Sony Ericsson outpaces expectations

Cellphone giant Sony Ericsson said on Monday it had outpaced a fast-growing global handset market to post profits for the third quarter well in excess of analysts’ expectations. Net profit rose to €104-million for the three months to September 30, up from €90-million in the same period of the previous year.
