French riots spiral out of control

Riots in France’s poor city suburbs appeared to be spiralling out of control on Monday after the worst night of violence to date, in which more than 30 police were injured and 1 400 cars burned across the country. "The shockwave has spread from Paris to the provinces," said the director general of the national police.

Billiton, Anglo drag JSE down

The JSE was weaker at midday on Monday dragged down by resources giants Anglo American and BHP Billiton, the bourse’s two heaviest weighted stocks. Although the overall index was in the red, advancers outnumbered decliners on it by about three to two.

Chiefs crash out of Coca-Cola Cup

Man-mountain Senegalese striker Mamadou Diallou led the onslaught as Jomo Cosmos bundled holder Kaizer Chiefs out of the Coca-Cola Cup with an emphatic and deserved 2-0 victory at Rustenburg’s Olympia Park on Sunday afternoon. Chiefs battled resolutely with 10 men until the end.

Tiger tamed in Atlanta

Bart Bryant fended off a challenge from world number one Tiger Woods on Sunday to post a six-shot win at the ,5-million PGA Tour Championship that surprised even himself. Retief Goosen, who started the day in second place, was off his game, leaving it to Woods to provide the only real threat.

Tornado devastates two American states

A tornado with winds exceeding 255kph tore a path of devastation through western Kentucky and southern Indiana early on Sunday as residents slept, reducing dozens of mobile homes to splinters and turning entire blocks of buildings into piles of rubble. At least 22 people were killed and 200 others injured.

Afgri acquires Daybreak Farms

Agricultural group Afgri on Monday announced that it has acquired Daybreak Farms for R110-million, subject to Competition Commission approval. The acquisition marks Afgri’s return to the broiler industry after it exited Early Bird Farm in 2004, citing shareholder agreement restrictions and conflict of interest with its partner Astral Foods.
