The timber of invasive alien trees cleared off watersheds and river systems around the country is to be used to make "eco-friendly" coffins, the Working for Water Programme said on Monday. Project leader Shaun Cozette said the solid-wood coffins will sell for between R450 and R500 each.

Riots in France’s poor city suburbs appeared to be spiralling out of control on Monday after the worst night of violence to date, in which more than 30 police were injured and 1 400 cars burned across the country. World-record-holder Paul Tergat of Kenya sprinted to victory ahead of defending champion Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa in the New York men’s marathon on Sunday. The 36-year-old Tergat crossed the line in two hours, nine minutes and 30 seconds, just ahead of Ramaala.

A tornado with winds exceeding 255kph tore a path of devastation through western Kentucky and southern Indiana early on Sunday as residents slept, reducing dozens of mobile homes to splinters and turning entire blocks of buildings into piles of rubble. Agricultural group Afgri on Monday announced that it has acquired Daybreak Farms for R110-million, subject to Competition Commission approval. The acquisition marks Afgri’s return to the broiler industry after it exited Early Bird Farm in 2004, citing shareholder agreement restrictions and conflict of interest with its partner Astral Foods.
