Invisible line divides Kashmir quake troops

For more than five decades they have shelled and shot at each other over the most heavily militarised frontier on earth, but now Indian and Pakistani troops are working side by side — almost. The sight of the nuclear rivals’ soldiers busily hoisting flags and driving bulldozers just a few footsteps away in the divided territory of Kashmir would have been unthinkable even two years ago.

‘The Wallabies have lost their way’

Hostage drama at Zonderwater prison

Surviving offenders, who held four Zonderwater prison staff hostage on Sunday, have been taken to Pretoria’s C-Max high security prison, a source in the Zonderwater prison said. ”They are not here anymore and I have heard that Ngobese, the leader, is dead. He had a firearm,” said control room operator Solomon Masilela.

Richtersveld claimants demand state aid

The impoverished Richtersveld community, seeking to finalise restitution for land currently held by state diamond mining company Alexkor, has turned to the courts to compel the government to provide them with legal aid. This comes as the state has allocated an additional R17-million for its own legal costs.

Soweto Marathon curse strikes again

The Soweto Marathon on Sunday ended yet again in controversy when the women’s winner Mamarola Tjoka was adjudged not to have crossed the start line. The athlete arrived at the start late and began the race beyond the start line which according to officials had infringed the laws.

Hong Kong man jailed in landmark web piracy case

A Hong Kong court sentenced a man to three months in prison Monday in what is believed to be the first jail sentence for distributing movie files over the popular online BitTorrent network. In a stark warning to online file sharers worldwide, Chan Nai-ming (38) an unemployed man who called himself "Big Crook", was jailed for uploading three Hollywood movies onto the web via the BitTorrent.
