Distell Group, South Africa’s largest listed wine and spirits producer, will be unveiling details of its long-awaited black economic empowerment (BEE) transaction on Wednesday September 21, the company said on Friday. Distell will make an announcement together with its partners on the initiative at its Nederberg cellar in Paarl.

The South African government-owned State Information Technology Agency’s net profit after tax for the period ended March this year jumped by 69% to R59,303-million from R35,085-million reported previously, Sita CEO Mavuso Msimang said on Friday. Revenue grew by 14,5% to R2,636-billion.

The Democratic Alliance has asked National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to reverse its loss of five seats in the House during the floor-crossing window period. A letter by DA chief whip Douglas Gibson, delivered to Mbete on Friday morning, also threatened court action should the party’s bid fail.

A senior Israeli defence official on Friday challenged the Palestinian Authority to slam shut the open border between Gaza and Egypt, saying its credibility was on the line over its failure to stop the flow of gunrunners and others across the frontier. There are fears al-Qaeda terrorists will infiltrate Gaza through the open border.

Australia’s immigration department said on Friday it had wrongly cancelled the visas of up to 8 000 international students and asked diplomatic posts around the world to tell the wronged pupils they can resume their courses. In a major hitch for Australia’s stated goal of becoming Asia’s education hub, a court found the immigration department had been using incorrect paperwork.

A sewage leak into the Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West was being fixed and posed no danger, the Madibeng municipality said on Friday. The extent of the pollution was being measured, but ”it is nothing to write home about”, said council spokesperson Kenneth Ngubegusha.

The JSE reached another record high on Friday as a surge in bullion to its best levels since June 1998 saw gold stocks soar. By 11.57am, the all share index was up 0,73% at 16 266,84 after earlier touching a record high of 16 272,14. The gold mining index rocketed 6,59%.
