AECI increases earnings

Listed South African specialist chemicals and explosives group AECI saw its headline earnings per ordinary share increase by 23% to 194 cents for the six months to June 30, from 158 cents for the first six months of 2004, the company said on Tuesday.

Another record for Roland

South African veteran Roland Schoeman and United States newcomer Jess Hardy surprised themselves with world-record performances at the 11th World Swimming Championships on Monday. Schoeman broke the 50m butterfly world record for the second time in as many days as he captured the gold in 22,96 seconds.

KFC still keeps the colonel’s recipe under lock and key

The handwritten recipe that launched a fast-food dynasty and made colonel Harland Sanders world famous is locked away at KFC headquarters — its contents so concealed that not even the chain’s top executive knows the ingredients. It was 65 years ago this month, at his roadside restaurant in Corbin, that Sanders perfected the blend of 11 herbs and spices for his ”finger lickin’ good” chicken.
