Drogba, Kezman lead Chelsea to victory

Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman scored in extra time on Sunday to help Chelsea take the League Cup with a 3-2 win over Liverpool. Drogba poked the ball in from close range in the 16th minute of extra time from a Glen Johnson throw-in. Kezman added a second goal five minutes later, awkwardly tapping the ball over the line from a Eidur Gudjohnsen cross.

Teenager helps SA reach Cosafa Cup finals

France-based teenager Katlego Mphela scored as South Africa edged Mauritius 1-0 on Sunday to reach the Cosafa Cup finals. Racing Strasbourg striker Mphela drilled a deflected free kick past goalkeeper Nicolas Doro after 35 minutes at the King George V Stadium to clinch first place in group A of the new-look Southern Africa football championship.

Ogilvy wins first PGA Tour title

Australian Geoff Ogilvy drained an 18-foot birdie putt on the second play-off hole on Sunday to win his first United States PGA Tour title in the -million Tucson event. Kevin Na, the youngest player on tour, and Mark Calcavecchia were in the play-off with Ogilvy after finishing 72 holes at 19-under-par 269.

Aussie becomes oldest first-time ATP winner

Unseeded Australian Wayne Arthurs became the oldest first-time winner since the ATP Tour was formed in 1990, beating third-seeded Mario Ancic of Croatia 7-5, 6-3 in the Tennis Channel Open final on Sunday. The 33-year-old left-hander, in his 128th ATP Tour-level tournament, dominated his 20-year-old opponent.

Controversial Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho insists he doesn’t care if he is loved or loathed as long as his team keep winning. The Portuguese could face censure after being sent from the dug-out during the 3-2 extra-time win over Liverpool in the League Cup final at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday.

Old Mutual SA life business hit by poor group sales

The 2004 life sales of Old Mutual, South Africa’s largest insurer, have been dented by a poor performance in its group sales, with group sales falling 48% for the year to R422-million from R809-million in 2003. This contributed to a 10% decline in the company’s total life sales, which came in at R3,08-billion rand on an annual premium equivalent basis for the year.

Hefty increase in petrol price announced

South Africa’s petrol price for all grades will rise by 42 cents a litre (c/l) from March 2, the Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Monday. The wholesale price of diesel 0,3% sulphur will rise by 33c/l and that of diesel 0,05% sulphur by 36c/l. During the review period, the average international product prices of petroleum products increased.

South African oil and chemicals group Sasol on Monday touched yet another all-time high on bullish sentiment toward the stock driven by the high oil and chemical prices, a re-rating of the stock by foreign investors and positioning ahead of the group’s latest interim results due next Monday, analysts said.

New look and name for Mercantile Lisbon Bank

One of the country’s most established banks, Mercantile Lisbon Bank, has undergone a complete makeover and hopes to return to profitability this year. As part of the makeover, it has changed its name to simply Mercantile Bank and exchanged its somewhat staid image for a fresh look to match the new course on which it is embarking.
