The president of Athletics South Africa (ASA), Leonard Chuene, on Thursday announced that the outgoing CEO, Banele Sindani, will be replaced by Linda Ferns, in her new capacity as general manager of ASA. Chuene said the ASA board had unanimously agreed that Ferns will be best suited to fill the role of general manager.

The proposed relaxation of income tax provisions relating to company restructurings announced in the 2005/6 Budget on Wednesday by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel will help simplify future Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) transactions, Marina Vayanos, Ernst & Young’s senior tax consultant said on Thursday.

The Chamber of Mines has described this year’s Budget as a success in ”balancing the need for a higher social wage with a need to promote a supply-side investment environment for business”. A game ranger was attacked and killed by an elephant in the Kruger Park, a park spokesperson said on Wednesday. Lance Corporal Wilson Ndlovu was conducting a routine patrol on Tuesday morning through the Stolznek area in the south of the park, said Raymond Travers, spokesperson for the park.

The South African Rugby Union (Saru) continues to enjoy the full support of the South African government, despite serious unhappiness with its president, Brian van Rooyen, within the ranks of Parliament’s sports portfolio committee. Saru seems to have sorted out its problems with Minister of Sport and Recreation Makhenkesi Stofile, but has not yet gained the unconditional support of the portfolio committee.

A rapper who is in jail awaiting a murder trial has angered the sheriff by recording parts of his forthcoming music video behind bars. The rapper C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, has been jailed for more than three years, facing a second-degree murder charge in the killing of a 16-year-old inside a nightclub.

African Oxygen Limited (Afrox) is presently spearheading more than 40 growth projects, one of which is a R100-million re-engineering of its gases operations centre in Germiston on the East Rand. These projects cover organic growth as well as new greenfield’s projects and acquisitions.
