Toxic waste has washed up on Somalia’s shores almost two months after the devastating tsunami that struck countries bordering the Indian Ocean, according to a study by the United Nations Environment Programme presented on Tuesday in Nairobi.

Attacks by local militia groups have killed about 100 people and driven 70 000 from their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s northeast Ituri region in the past two months, United Nations officials said on Tuesday. In the latest attack, three villagers were killed on Friday at Baliba, about 35km northeast of Ituri’s main town of Bunia.

Brazilian Alex scored early on to earn dominating PSV Eindhoven a 1-0 Champions League home victory at the Philips Stadium over hapless Monaco, who did well to keep down the winning scoreline on Tuesday. PSV, inspired by midfielder Mark van Bommel, had countless chances in the first half but only managed Alex’s eighth-minute goal.
