University lectures resume after protest

Lectures resumed at all of the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) campuses on Wednesday after a late-night agreement with students ended a class boycott and street protests, a UJ spokesperson said.

”I have just checked with security on all the campuses and everything is fine,” Jonathan Stead said.

On Tuesday, students took to the streets outside the campus in Bunting Road near the South African Broadcasting Corporation and police blocked the road to prevent a march to the nearby Kingsway campus.

Students were highlighting grievances related to the merger of the Technikon Witwatersrand and the Rand Afrikaans University.

Details of the UJ agreement will be released once student leaders have consulted their constituencies, Stead said.

Comment was not immediately available from student leaders.

Apart from a brief stoning incident, the UJ protest was spirited but disciplined. But at the Mamelodi campus of the University of Pretoria students set tyres alight and some were arrested.

Minister of Education Naledi Pandor condemned the violence on Tuesday, saying: ”There is no reason for anyone to act in the manner we have observed on television in recent days. It’s absolutely unacceptable and I object to it.” — Sapa
