The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) on Wednesday issued a press statement regarding its declaration of a deadlock on the payment of educator backlogs. The matter arose out of the absence of any salary progression for educators from 1996 to 2002.

The long-delayed taxi recapitalisation programme will be implemented from the beginning of the 2005/06 financial year, Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe announced in Pretoria on Thursday. Costing the government an estimated R7,7-billion, the recapitalisation programme will replace the country’s ageing taxi fleet.

Brothels in Hong Kong are turning customers into unwitting porn movie stars by filming their antics on secret cameras, a news report said on Thursday. Sophisticated pinhole surveillance cameras have been found in raids on brothels in the city’s Mongkok red-light district, the South China Morning Post reported.

A Hong Kong police officer has had 28 minutes of pay docked from his salary after he was caught visiting a prostitute while on duty, a news report said on Thursday. Sergeant Wing Sing-tak (34) was also demoted after being spotted going into a brothel in his uniform for 28 minutes while he was on patrol in the city’s red-light district.

Giving a new meaning to the term grassroots music, Pioneer Corporation said on Thursday it has developed a next-generation disc made of corn to let the eco-conscious consumer dispose of data in the soil. The Japanese electronics maker said the Blu-Ray optical disc can be written once and stores 25 gigabytes of data.

A crowd of Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) activists marched to Parliament on Thursday as part of a national demonstration calling for the government to pay the TAC’s costs in recent litigation. The spirited protesters toyi-toyied and chanted their way down several blocks in the city centre, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Alleged Mafia kingpin Vito Palazzolo is suing top police investigator Captain Piet Viljoen and a former member of the organised crime unit for R5-million each for defamation. Advocate Klaus von Lieres und Wilkau, who has acted as a consultant to Palazzolo, revealed this on Monday in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
