Sanzar moots Super 14 competition

Sanzar said on Monday it wants the Super 12 rugby union competition expanded to 14 teams and an extra round of Tri-Nations Tests under a new broadcast deal being negotiated with media giant News Corporation. A Sanzar statement released by the Australian Rugby Union said South Africa and Australia would each have an extra team in an expanded Super 14 competition.

Easy wins for tennis champs at US Open

Serena Williams left her opponent swinging at shadows, then Andy Roddick finished off his work with a 217kph fastball. Roddick and Williams easily aced their latest tests in the US Open on Sunday, serving notice that they are just warming up. Roddick overpowered Guillermo Canas 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.

England take series despite India win

India saw off a Michael Vaughan-inspired recovery to beat England by 23 runs in the third one-day international at Lord’s in London on Sunday. But England still took the three-match series 2-1, a warm-up for the ICC Champions Trophy that starts on Friday, after seven-wicket and 70-run wins at Trent Bridge and The Oval respectively.

Rossi’s winning streak continues

Italian Valentino Rossi, known as ”Il Dottore”, won the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix on Sunday, racing the 28 laps of the 4,182km circuit in 46 minutes and 34,911 seconds into his fourth consecutive victory. Japan’s Makoto Tamada, who took the pole position, finished second with 46:40,022.

Bafana Bafana: ‘All is not lost’

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter will be calling up Manchester United star Quinton Fortune and Danish-based winger Sibusiso Zuma for next month’s vital group two World Cup qualifier against Uganda in Kampala. Bafana were beaten 1-0 by the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier.

Sorry, I should’ve said ‘Mother Teresa’

My gut instinct tells me that I should not really be bothered to respond to Ronald Suresh Roberts’s garbled response to my comments on his low-intensity war with Nadine Gordimer, who recently withdrew her “authorisation” for his long-awaited biography of herself. But since he now appears to have further set himself up as the sole authorised spokesperson of the so-called “African diaspora” (whatever that is) as well, I suppose I should make the effort.

Public-sector strike looms

The possibility of a public sector strike loomed on Monday as both the government and trade unions refused to move on pay negotiations. With weeks to go before the matric exams, teachers and other public sector employees including police and nurses, threatened to go on strike if their salary demands were not met by Thursday.
