Bush Bucks name new coach

Bush Bucks on Wednesday unveiled Zimbabwean Sunday Marimo as their new head coach. However, Marimo will only start his new job on August 30. The former Zimbabwe national coach is still awaiting a work permit. The appointment of Marimo was confirmed by the Eastern Cape side’s communications director.

Praise for South African bowling

Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene on Wednesday praised South Africa’s bowling on the opening day of the first Test in Sri Lanka. ”I thought they bowled to a fine line and length with the field set well, so it was hard to get runs,” said Jayawardene, who struck an unbeaten 116 in a team score of 279-7.

Cape Town roads flooded

Cape Town’s weather on Thursday made up for what has so far been the driest winter for decades with a downpour that flooded roads across the city. A minibus taxi overturned on De Waal Drive’s Hospital Bend, where incoming lanes were awash in brown, silt-laden water.

South Africa fight back in Sri Lanka

South Africa put up a determined effort after Mahela Jayawardene carried Sri Lanka to a big first-innings total on the second day of the first Test on Thursday. The visiting side were 82 without loss in reply to Sri Lanka’s huge 486, which was made possible due to a superb innings of 237 from Jayawardene.

Bird-flu fears grip Cape ostrich industry

A suspected outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) in the Eastern Cape province has halted all movement of ostriches to the Western Cape until a confirmed diagnosis has been made regarding the cause of serious mortalities at three ostrich farms in the Cradock-Somerset East region of the Eastern Cape.

Israel launches Gaza air strike

The Israeli military stepped up its campaign to put an end to rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip by sending reinforcements to the north of the territory and carrying out an air strike in the area on Wednesday. Three Palestinians were wounded in the Israeli helicopter strike near Jabaliya refugee camp, medical and security sources said.
