Arms deal returns to haunt ANC

US: Sanctions did not cause Zim meltdown

Zimbabwe is using Western sanctions imposed on President Robert Mugabe and his coterie as a convenient excuse to explain its economic meltdown, the United States ambassador to Harare said on Thursday. ”Neither the US nor any other country has imposed general sanctions on the Southern African nation,” Christopher Dell wrote in the independent Financial Gazette.

Landis to miss Tour de France

Tour de France winner Floyd Landis has said he will not take part in this year’s race, the French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) announced on Thursday. AFLD said they had postponed their disciplinary hearing into Landis scheduled for Thursday after the American promised not to participate in any race in France until the end of 2007.

ANC expects 10 000 at Ma Tambo’s funeral

The African National Congress (ANC) expects 10 000 people to attend party stalwart Adelaide Tambo’s funeral on Saturday where both former president Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki will address mourners. Mandela will deliver a message of condolence and Mbeki will give the funeral speech at the Wattville Stadium in Ekurheleni.

Manuel to attend G7 finance forum

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel will attend a meeting of the group of seven (G7) ministers of finance and central bank governors, in Essen, Germany, the National Treasury said on Wednesday. Manuel was invited by the G7, together with finance ministers from Brazil, India, Russia, China and Mexico, to attend the meeting to be held on Friday.

Mugabe axes finance minister

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday sacked Finance Minister Herbert Murerwa and promoted several deputies in a Cabinet reshuffle announced through state radio. Mugabe picked former minister of indigenisation Samuel Mumbengegwi as Murerwa’s replacement.

Committee clears World Cup finance hurdle

The local organising committee has cleared its first hurdle in the race to have amenities in place for the Soccer World Cup by balancing a stadium budget R3,4-billion over the original R8,7-billion. This was done by trimming costs and obtaining additional finance from the municipalities where games would be played.
