Inzamam anchors Pakistan’s victory

Pakistan skipper Inzamam ul-Haq capped his return with an uncharacteristic unbeaten 42 to help his side beat the West Indies by two wickets in the second one-day international on Thursday. Inzamam hooked his 86th ball for his fourth boundary to pull off an exciting victory with 10 balls to spare.

Spam is back with a vengeance

Most internet users already know it: spam is on the rise again as the senders of unwanted e-mail advertisements find new ways to circumvent filtering systems. A study released last month by the security firm Postini found that unwanted messages now account for 91% of all e-mail, and over the past 12 months the daily volume of spam rose by 120%.

Kagame says France supported genocide

Rwandan President Paul Kagame accused France on Wednesday of actively supporting the 1994 genocide in his country when 800 000 people were slaughtered. Kagame rejected French claims that he was involved in the death of a former leader — an event widely regarded as the trigger for the genocide — and accused Paris of fuelling the mass killing.

ANC gets failing mark on FF+ report card

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has scored an average of 30% in the past year — down from 38% last year — in the eyes of the average Freedom Front Plus (FF+) supporter, says its leader, Dr Pieter Mulder. On Tuesday, he released the results of his party’s annual ”report card” of the ANC’s performance.

Survey: Many poor people financially illiterate in SA

South African banks have drawn nearly two million poor people into the banking net in the past two years but most of them remain financially illiterate and still prefer informal saving vehicles, a new study shows. The survey, released on Tuesday by research group FinMark Trust, found that since October 2004, 1,9-million people opened a low-cost bank account.

Lung cancer claims anti-smoking expert

Allen Carr, the Briton who helped millions of people to quit smoking, died on November 29 after losing his battle with lung cancer, his spokesperson said. The 72-year-old, a former 100-a-day smoker who stubbed out his last cigarette 23 years ago, died at his home near Malaga, southern Spain, with his family at his bedside, she added.

Good governance needed to deal with Aids

Good governance in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was the key to dealing with HIV/Aids, Judge Edwin Cameron said on Monday. ”Where there are human rights abuse, we cannot deal properly with Aids,” Cameron said in Johannesburg at the launch of the Aids Rights Alliance for Southern Africa’s report.
